Why not just target the 3 main areas of working out - cardio, stretching, and strength.

The best way to do that is by running (usually treadmill), exercise balls, and a lot of weight lifting.

A personal trainer can show you what machines and exercises to do to get the results you want whether it is to loose weight, to target trouble areas, to increase endurance or to build muscle. Usually if you hire a personal trainer for an afternoon, they can show you how to exercise properly and then you can do it on your own. You could also search the internet to learn more about exercises and workouts that meet your needs. The one thing a personal trainer can do as can a workout buddy is push you to exercise if you're the type of person who isn't motivated to do it on their own.
